You have to hand it to the walking dead. What they lack in speed and agility, they more than make up for in sheer single-minded determination. Im-Ho-Tep is a case in point. He’s an ancient Egyptian priest, cursed for his terrible crimes against the gods. A team of British archaeologists digs up his sarcophagus, along with a box inscribed with a warning that opening it will unleash death and destruction. You’ll never guess what they do. Once freed, Im-Ho-Tep takes on the appropriately evil alias Ardath Bey and gets to the task of resurrecting his ancient lover–which will, of course, require a living human surrogate. While the premise may sound formulaic, The Mummy in fact turns out to be bracingly weird, relying on atmospheric creepiness rather than on jump-out-and-scare-you effects. Boris Karloff gives a terrific performance as Im-Ho-Tep. He has all the malevolence the film requires, but also manages subtler touches; the expression in his eyes as he is wrapped in preparation for being buried alive is absolutely chilling. Instead of forcing him to do all the tedious shambling around that so many mummies resort to, the filmmakers have wisely given Im-Ho-Tep/Ardath Bey a nearly living appearance once he’s cleaned up and has a few psychic powers to boot, making him a potent adversary. Stock up on ace bandages and prepare for a good spooky evening. –Ali Davis

Check out the trailer:

So what’s Eye See You all about?

What do you get when you cross the director of I Know What You Did Last Summer with Sylvester Stallone? You get a slasher film in which the victims are not screaming, scantily clad teens, but parka-clad cops. Whether that’s an improvement on the genre is open for debate. With Eye See You (which never hit U.S. theaters but was released internationally as D-Tox), Stallone’s career has officially “Van-Dammed.” But the role of FBI special agent Jake Malloy is something of a dramatic departure. Unable to catch a cop killer before he nastily dispatches his girlfriend (wouldn’t you know; right before Jake was about to propose!), Jake takes to the bottle. He enters a snowbound rehab center for cops housed in the Wyoming mountains. The demons Jake must confront are not just psychological. A killer is stalking the residents one by one. Shallow characterizations and ham-fisted dialogue are good for armchair heckling, but for Stallone fans, this will be of interest as even more of a career curiosity than Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. –Donald Liebenson

Personally, I thought Sylvester Stallone was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Charles S. Dutton.

This 1993 sequel to the St. Bernard hit finds big, fluffy Beethoven now at home with gruff-but-lovable dad Charles Grodin, supermom Bonnie Hunt, and their three kids. The story continues with Beethoven falling for a female St. Bernard and having a litter, unbeknownst to Grodin, while the new dog’s owner (Debi Mazar) starts angling for benefits from this union. The larger dog pool certainly adds more cuteness and laughs to this follow-up, and Grodin and Hunt–consummate professionals–don’t let sequel-itis lower their energy or their wonderfully idiosyncratic way with dialogue. Mazar brings her own edge to the proceedings, too, but in the end, the film’s accent is still very much on a feel-good experience for everyone. –Tom Keogh

Looking for The Gospel According to Jesus?

You will enjoy MOVIETITLEMACRO because...

Check out the trailer:

So what’s The Gospel According to Jesus all about?

What is the gospel according to Jesus? Simply this: that the love we all long for in our innermost heart is already present, beyond longing. -Stephen Mitchell, author of The Gospel According to Jesus. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” -Imam Talib Abdur-Rashid The Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood, Harlem, NY “For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you.” -Maya Angelou Author/Poet, North Carolina No one in history has been as famous and widely interpreted as Jesus of Nazareth. For two thousand years, beginning with the Gospels, people have tried to capture the essence of his teachings in words, in art, in music - and in their daily experience. The Gospel According to Jesus continues the noble quest for Jesus’ actual words. This translation and guide is based on poet/scholar Stephen Mitchell’s popular book, which critics called “a masterpiece of immense power and permanence.” You will see hundreds of people - from our most famous celebrities to the homeless poor - read and analyze this “living gospel.” Participants include: Maya Angelou, Rev.Calvin Butts, Deepak Chopra, Ran Dass, Erica Jong, Norman Lear, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi, Marianne Williamson and many others.

Personally, I thought Judy Collins was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Sam Keen.

Maybe “nobody’s perfect,” as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles “I’m Through with Love” but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant–a spot-on impersonation.) The script by director Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry’s feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of “Park Avenue Fantasy.” Some Like It Hot is so delightfully fizzy, it’s hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behavior. The results, however, are sublime. –Robert Horton

Watch to watch Ladder 49 [Blu-ray] online?

Check out this trailer first:

So what’s Ladder 49 [Blu-ray] all about?

In paying simple tribute to firefighters, Ladder 49 gets to the heart of those who risk their lives for a living. Director Jay Russell brought similar sincerity to his memorable family favorite My Dog Skip, and despite the banalities of an ultra-conventional screenplay by Lewis Colick, Ladder 49 generates so much goodwill toward its Baltimore firemen that you may find yourself unexpectedly overcome with emotional appreciation for guys like Jack (Joaquin Phoenix), a firefighter whose career, courtship, marriage, and fatherhood are viewed in flashback as he struggles to survive in the present-day framing scenes, cut off from his fellow firemen in the fiery guts of a collapsing 20-floor building. There are no surprises in the familiar scenes of male bonding, dangerous rescues, injury and death, and the supportive concern of Jack’s wife (Jacinda Barrett), but by focusing on the simple integrity of Jack’s personal and professional commitment, the movie gives Phoenix a showcase for unselfish virtue, while John Travolta provides dignified support as Jack’s mentor and devoted firehouse captain. Ladder 49 is routine in most respects, but it’s a much-deserved valentine to working-class heroes. –Jeff Shannon

When was it made?

2/13/2007

Who stars in it?

Looking for Seven / Taking Lives?

I enjoyed MOVIETITLEMACRO because...

Check out the trailer:

So what’s Seven / Taking Lives all about?

The most viscerally frightening and disturbing homicidal maniac picture since The Silence of the Lambs, Seven is based on an idea that’s both gruesome and ingenious. A serial killer forces each of his victims to die by acting out one of the seven deadly sins. The murder scene is then artfully arranged into a grotesque tableau, a graphic illustration of each mortal vice. From the jittery opening credits to the horrifying (and seemingly inescapable) concluding twist, director David Fincher immerses us in a murky urban twilight where everything seems to be rotting, rusting, or molding; the air is cold and heavy with dread. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are the detectives who skillfully track down the killer–all the while unaware that he has been closing in on them, as well. Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey are also featured, but it is director Fincher and the ominous, overwhelmingly oppressive atmosphere of doom that he creates that are the real stars of the film. It’s a terrific date movie–for vampires. –Jim Emerson

While it doesn’t rank with such grim classics as The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, D.J. Caruso’s Taking Lives offers similarly heavy atmosphere, beginning well before fizzling into absurdity. Freely adapted from the novel by Michael Pye, and set in Montreal (although it was filmed in Quebec City), the plot trades in several familiar tropes of the serial-killer genre, beginning with the FBI agent (Angelina Jolie) who brings her unique skills (and brooding, low-key demeanor) to the vexing case of a killer who, out of apparent self-loathing, steals the identities of his victims and lives their lives until it’s time for the next gruesome murder. Ethan Hawke plays the killer’s alleged next victim, and in a film filled with twists that grow increasingly unconvincing, Keifer Sutherland is menacingly cast as a shifty suspect. Caruso’s previous film was the creepy drug thriller The Salton Sea, so he’s well-qualified to infuse Taking Lives with a darkly stylish sense of dread and at least one good shock to keep your adrenaline flowing. The second half essentially betrays the promise of the first, but there’s enough going on to hold your interest to the end. –Jeff Shannon

Personally, I thought Brad Pitt was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Morgan Freeman.
